Let’s face facts: hair treatments are daunting. The packaging is overwhelming with all those scientific terms, and even the instructions seem more like rocket manuals. Yet, everyone will eventually need hair repair, especially those prone to chemical and styling damage.

Don’t wait until hair is already ruined to learn the solution. In one brief article, we will explain how to use one of the top treatments on the market: K18.

If you’re passionate about hair, the name K18 probably sounds familiar. The American brand is toted by celebrities like Hailey Beiber, Selena Gomez, Rhianna and even Khole Kardashian. Its popularity stems from its molecular formula that repairs hair internally — all in four minutes!

K18 is so effective they’ve only released two products: Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask and Leave-In Molecular Repair Mist. However, fans have demanded more options, and their pleas were answered. K18 Shampoo and Conditioner are predicted to be sought-after new items in 2022. We can hardly wait to try them ourselves!

By the end of this article, hair treatments like K18 will be a welcome sight. You will know how to repair damaged hair and shield against further harm with ease.

If it’s good enough for celebrities, it’s certainly good enough for us!

Behind the Brand: K18 Haircare

For anyone who isn’t already familiar with K18 (or wants a refresher), this section is for you.

One fact that always surprises newbies is the K18 backstory. The brand was started by husband and wife duo Suveen Sahib and Britta Cox. Both Americans were entrepreneurs at heart, and their first venture was Aquis hair towels and turbans. Using technology like AQUITEX and CopperSure fabric, their comfortable creations were game-changers. Thousands of happy reviews are available on their website and their aesthetically pleasing Instagram. They continue selling over a million units each year and regularly feature in ‘best haircare’ listicles.

Yet, even after introducing their new company, Sahib and Cox were frustrated. They were listening to a constant stream of complaints about liquid haircare. Why were products so complicated. Why did they take so long to activate? And why did so many not work?

Clearly, the industry needed an overhaul.

In search of answers, the couple reached out to experts at the University of Minho Biological Engineering Center in Portugal. With the team already studying protein engineering, the collaboration was a no-brainer. The new mission gave them a renewed sense of vigour, and they spent decades scanning the entire human genome. Finally, their efforts eventually paid off. A bioactive peptide was discovered that repaired broken keratin chains — the source of damaged hair.

Just like Aquis, the K18 website quickly filled with countless five-star reviews. The husband and wife duo had done the impossible once again.

How Does the K18 Bioactive Peptide Work?

Before learning how to use K18 products, it’s essential to understand how they work. As mentioned previously, damage is caused by broken keratin chains, and these can occur in several ways.

Chemical treatments like bleach and hair dye are major culprits. However, electrical styling tools, mechanical styling tools and low-quality hair products can also cause harm, so it’s vital to thoroughly research your options.

It’s true that hair products are safer than ever nowadays. Quality suppliers like AMR Hair & Beauty offer bleach and hair dye infused with argan oil and keratin, and their electrical styling tools have ceramic plating to reduce heat damage. Yet, the effects can’t be eliminated completely. That’s why it’s essential to supplement your routine with restorative alternatives like Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask and Leave-In Molecular Repair Mist

The mask and mist use a similar formula (why mess with perfection, right?). Each contains the bioactive peptide responsible for healing keratin chains. It’s called K18Peptide, and the sequence copies natural proteins and enzymes to rebuild the hair internally.

The results are backed by science – users regain 91% strength and 94% elasticity. Plus, the improvement does not wash away in the shower like other products.

Remember that the effects occur in just four minutes, too!

With so much power packed inside the formula, it’s easy to overlook the other benefits of K18. Not many people realise the brand is vegan and cruelty-free. Additionally, their masks and mists are colour-safe and dermatologically tested. They do not contain nasties like parabens, sulphates, silicons or artificial colours.

It’s proof that haircare can be effective and ethical, too!

K18 Vs. Olaplex — How Do They Compare?

The closest comparison to K18 is Olaplex. The bond-building technology can repair and protect hair from damage using an intensive formula. Unfortunately, bond builders are perhaps responsible for the intimidating reputation of hair treatments. Let’s explain how to use them (if we can).

Olaplex uses a numbered system to roughly indicate the order of products. This doesn’t sound too complicated, except the numbers often don’t correspond. N.°0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment should be used with N°.3 Hair Perfector. However, N°.3 Hair Perfector can be used as a standalone, whereas N.°0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment cannot. (N.°1 Bond Multiplier is technically the first step in the Olaplex hair service system, in case you’re wondering).

There are also in-between products like Olaplex No.4P Blonde Enhancer Toning Shampoo and products not included in the Olaplex hair service system like Olaplex 4 In 1 Moisture Mask Treatment

Confused yet? Suffice to say, there’s an entire FAQ about how to use their products. So, if you don’t want to tackle the entire Olaplex hair service system just yet, check out the subsection below. It might be more user-friendly.

How To Use K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask?

K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask is the most straightforward of the K18 range. There are only four steps in the process, and no other products are involved. The mask can even act as a standalone service at salons. So, how do you use K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask?

The steps are as follows:

  1. Apply your chosen shampoo to the hair, but do not add conditioner. Use a towel to dry the hair until damp.
  2. To begin, use one pump of the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask. Continue to add more product according to the demands of the hair, such as thickness and damage level. Then, work the mask evenly into the hair from the root to the ends until subtly coated.
  3. Allow the mask to sit for four minutes to activate. This is when the healing begins.
  4. Do not rinse out. Instead, style the hair as desired.

How To Use K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mist?

K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mist is slightly more involved, although the process is still stress-free. It’s best used before all damaging practices to maintain healthy hair.

To use K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mist, follow these steps:

  1. Lightly mist the hair with water, but do not saturate.
  2. Section the hair as many times as needed, and apply 2-6 sprays of K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mist per bundle. Gently work into the hair so the strands are covered.
  3. Let the mist sit for four minutes so the product can activate. Do not rinse off as this will eliminate the effects.
  4. Dry the hair and process with your usual chemical treatment.
  5. Use shampoo to cleanse the hair, but do not use conditioner.
  6. Towel-dry gently and thoroughly.
  7. Complete the treatment process using K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask.
