The 18 in 1 line was first renowned and made a favourite when it first released its Nourishing range. Its later additions were just as well received and loved by both salons and clients. It is for the very reasons that 18 in 1 prides itself for; the 18 in 1 benefits it boasts. I wouldn’t be able to tell you how this product really does speak the volumes it preaches if I hadn’t used it myself. Its sulfate-free, salt-free and paraben-free formula that has a delightful coconutty cream scent is what gets me each time. My hair stays moisturised and nourished without becoming greasy within the first 3 days, which is all a girl could ever ask for! And above all this, the brand is Australian made and owned and animal cruelty-free. That’s a big tick on my list. So how does one go about using the 18 in 1 range? Well, I spoke to all our in-house hairdressers to get some intel on how to most effectively make use of this line, range by range.

The Nourishing Range

Is your hair dry, damaged and undernourished? Then this could be the right treatment for you and your entire family. This was the first line I stumbled across and I absolutely loved the moisturising crème with its delectable coconut crème scent. 18 in 1 Nourishing Shampoo, Conditioner, Intensive Treatment and Moisturiser Crème are enriched with Argan Oil, Panthenol and Vitamin E, all of which have properties that restore the hair to health and vitality.

The benefits all come from the ingredients of:

  • Argan Oil – an effective conditioner full of antioxidants that help to moisturise the scalp, treat dry and damaged hair and protect the hair from UV.
  • Panthenol – a derivative of vitamin B5, a humectant that helps retain moisture from the atmosphere to keep the hair hydrated. It spreads evenly on the hair strand, forming a smooth film over the hair cuticle that enhances the light reflection and shine on hair.
  • Vitamin E – can help prevent hair loss, improve scalp circulation, balance oil production and support an overall healthy shine.

So how do you reap the benefits of the Nourishing line? Through this simple regime:

Step 1: Apply nourishing shampoo to damp or wet hair. Lather and rinse. The first wash should lift the dirt, oil and build up of sebum in your hair, which will open up the cuticle which will prepare you for step 2.

Step 2: Apply your second wash of nourishing shampoo that will actually penetrate your hair and scalp with all its goodness. Lather and rinse again.

Step 3: Apply conditioner to the hair and leave in for 3-5 minutes so that it can rehydrate your hair, seal up the cuticle and lock in the moisture.

Added step: When you feel like your hair needs an added boost, try the 18 in 1 Intensive Treatment on your hair. Simply apply to towel dried hair and leave in for 5-10 minutes to allow the goodness to soak in and activate. Perhaps replace conditioning with this step once a week, depending on how often you wash your hair.

Step 4: Once you have towel dried your hair, apply some moisturising crème as a leave-in to continue the moisturising effect throughout the day. It was also keep your hair smelling wonderful!

The Violet and Blue Range

The 18 in 1 Violet and Blue range is a favourite with the blondes. They are honestly the best blonde toning products I have come across. One of the reasons they are the most enriching and nourishing product on the market is because of the active ingredient of Kakadu Plum, not only an Australian native but also the plant with the highest Vitamin C content out of all other fruits. Rich in antioxidants, Kakadu Plum also assists in the removal of free radicals.

Which of the violet and blue range is the best for you? According the basic colour wheel principles, violet is used to combat yellow tones whereas blue is used to counteract orange tones. The correct tone for you depends on the underlying pigment of your hair. If your hair has a pale yellow or yellow undertone, use the violet or intense violet range to tone. If your hair has more of an orange, copper or brassy pigment, then use the blue or intense blue range. The intense range is a stronger pigment than the original formulations.

Once you have chosen your colour, the next step is to commence toning and treatment.

Step 1: Apply generous amount of violet or blue shampoo to wet or damp hair. Lather hair and rinse. The first wash should lift the dirt, oil and build-up of sebum in your hair, which will open up the cuticle which will prepare you for step 2.

Step 2: Apply your second wash and leave on for 5-10 minutes. The longer you leave the product on, the more it will tone. The second wash will also penetrate the hair and scalp with all the goodness of the shampoo’s ingredients. Rinse off and squeeze hair dry.

Step 3: Apply the Violet or Blue Treatment mask to the hair and leave in for 3-5 minutes. This will work as a treatment on your hair while also toning it to perfection. It will rehydrate your hair, seal up the cuticle and lock in the moisture.

Detox

I must confess that while all of 18 in 1 is amazing, this is my absolute favourite of the range. The magic of this product is in the activated bamboo charcoal, known for its ability to absorb toxins and thereby removing them for a deeper cleanse and detoxifying effect. What I love about it is that my hair feels less weighed down after using it and my sebum/oil production is heavily reduced, meaning I reduce the amount of washes I normally do in the week. This shampoo is also enriched with Canadian Willow Herb that has anti-bacterial properties to reduce redness and inflammation on the scalp. It also has a zesty scent which makes the product feel even more cleansing!

There are three products in the detox line: shampoo, conditioner and treatment.

Step 1: Apply Detox Shampoo to damp or wet hair. Lather and rinse. The first wash should lift the dirt, oil and build-up of sebum in your hair, which will open up the cuticle which will prepare you for step 2.

Step 2: Apply your second wash of Detox Shampoo that will actually penetrate your hair and scalp with all its goodness. Lather and rinse again.

Step 3: Apply Detox Conditioner to the hair and leave in for 3-5 minutes so that it can rehydrate your hair, seal up the cuticle and lock in the moisture.

Step 4: Once a week, use the Detox Treatment Mask in place of the conditioner for a deeper action treatment that will replenish your hair to perfect health.

Heat Protectant:

18 in 1 Smoothing and Thermal

Don’t forget to protect your hair from the heat and harsh weather by applying some form of thermal protectant. This is to ensure that your hair receives minimal damage before you apply any heating tools like a hair dryer, hair straightener or curler. There are also external environmental factors to consider such as UV exposure from the sun. Heat can not only weaken your hair’s natural proteins and natural oils, but also can fade your original hair colour. If you want all the work you have put into nourishing your hair and maintaining the colour, it is crucial you uphold it with this final step. There are two options; the 18 in 1 Thermal Spray or 18 in 1 Smoothing Cream – both with an indulgent coconut creme scent.

Thermal Spray

18 in 1 Thermal Spray is an easy thermal spray applied to towel-dried hair before you start using any heating tools. It is light in consistency and controls the frizz in the hair, minimising humidity and damage done after using heating appliances. Simply spritz on before you start heating.

Smoothing Cream

The smoothing cream is a bit thicker in consistency which works effectively on thicker more frizz and humidity prone hair. It is also quite moisturising and leaves your hair smooth and smelling delicious all day! Apply 1 or 2 pumps throughout towel-dried hair and heat away.

So there you have it, an extensive how-to for our most loved 18 in 1 range. Give it a go and be one step closer to the brilliance of your hair.
