Do you describe yourself as someone who likes to colour their hair often or use plenty of heat for styling? Perhaps you’re a hairdresser with a client who’s a little over-eager to bleach. If you tick any of these boxes, then the Olaplex shampoo and conditioner may be just what saves your hair (or your clients)!

So what exactly is Olaplex and why’s it so well-loved? We will delve into the origins of Olaplex and end with the technical science behind it, to see how it can be used to help restore hair health!

Where Did Olaplex Start?

Olaplex started out like many other great products before their time, in a garage. It was founded by Dean Christal in 2014. Dean had been working in the beauty industry for some time. His brother had created his own tan line, while his parents were both working in the industry too. His mother ran a home-based salon, while his father was a beauty distributor for 26 stores around the US. Christal had been working on trying to create UV silicon for hair. He was at the point of giving up when he was given the contact details for Craig Hawker, a professor at the University of Santa Barbara. After they had an in-depth conversation, it wasn’t long before they were working together in the garage of Dr Eric Presslys home, a doctor who would help to create Olaplex.

When he finally felt he had the formula right, he met with some celebrity hairdressers and it wasn’t long before Olaplex shampoo and conditioner were being used on celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and Gwenneth Paltrow. From there, the brand grew like crazy when people noticed the benefits of using Olaplex when carrying out the colouring services, it reduced the risk of hair damage ten-fold, becoming its own specialised patented formula.

What Does Olaplex Do?

While Olaplex is widely loved, many people struggle to understand the complexity of the formulation. Firstly, there are a number of products in the Olaplex range and while most of them carry out a similar purpose, they all slightly vary. First and foremost, the formula aims to repair extremely damaged hair. Secondly, it also aims to help protect the hair follicles when carrying out bleaching and colouring services.

Olaplex helps to restore broken disulphide bonds that can comprise the hairs integrity. When these bonds are broken, hair deterioration is experienced. To help prevent this, the patented formula repairs the hair from the inside out! With the single ingredient Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, bonds are restored and hair is manageable, soft and smooth.

Types Of Hair Damage Olaplex Repairs:

Olaplex is known for bringing all types of hair back to life. Some of the main types of hair damage are:

    • Thermal damage: Caused by extreme heat from hot styling tools such as blow-dryers, curlers and straighteners.
    • Chemicals factors: Damage from bleaching/colouring and hair treatments like perms.
    • Environmental factors: UV exposure and humidity can cause significant hair changes, as does extreme cold.
    • Mechanical factors: Brushing, combing and any friction caused to the hair will add stress and compromise the hairs condition.

The Science Behind Olaplex Shampoo & Conditioner

Surely a special treatment, oil or Olaplex shampoo and conditioner can’t work miracles, right? It’s understandable that you may be sceptical. For years people have had to suffer trying to maintain colour damaged hair and the solution cant be created that easily! Well luckily for us, some of the greatest minds came together to make this incredible product!

While science may go a little over our heads, the products are proven to work. When products No.0 & No.3 are used in tandem, they are 68% more likely to repair the hair and make it 3 times stronger!

Olaplex Products No.0 & No.3

While each and every person may have different hair concerns and needs, we can all use a little restoration from time to time. If you’re not a professional, Olaplex has created a diagnostic quiz to help determine the best product for you! If you’re a hairdresser though, you’ll most likely find you’ll have a few key products you’ll use.

No.0 & No.3 as mentioned earlier will always provide noticeable results. No.3 is their best selling treatment and is perfect to use at the basin! After colouring or by adding a small amount in with the developer, it helps to protect the hair. This can be given to customers to take home too, for those with really damaged hair, they can use it up to 3 times a week.

Olaplex Shampoo and Conditioner

We recommended keeping up to date the strengthening of the hair through the Olaplex shampoo and conditioner. No.4 Shampoo helps to reduce things like frizz and remove excess oil, while No.5 helps to re-link broken bonds. The shampoo can be used daily if required or following the use of No.3. It’s colour safe and has been proven to reduce breakage, reduce oils and help strengthen hair! Follow on by using the maintenance conditioner! After a few washes, you’ll notice the reduction in split ends and the benefits of silky smooth hair!

Smooth Styling With No.6 & No.7

No. 6 & No.7  are perfect to use in conjunction with the other treatments. Unlike the others, these can be left in the hair, helping to fight against additional damage. That means external factors like UV are less likely to further damage your hair. The cream of No.6 is highly moisturising, so it’s a perfect solution for those dry and frizzy hair types. Flyaways can be eliminated for up to 72 hours! This is extremely great to use on clients for their wedding if they are after something noticeable and stunning! No.7 will be the protector! If you want noticeable shine and colour vibrancy, this is the perfect solution. Did we mention it protects against the sun!

Product Frequency

The frequency that the shampoo and conditioner can be used depends on you and your hair needs, or your client’s hair type. Some hair is more prone to breakage than others, so will need a combination of products to be used. For example, Someone with oily hair may wash it every day and use a number of products to help reduce oily hair, where someone with dry hair is once a week. However, they may be more prone to split ends and snapping, so may use No.7 on their ends. This could be done every few days and used to re-add moisture, or use other shine products in conjunction to get optimum results!
