Our favourite home-grown model Miranda Kerr swears by it, I’ve been including coconut oil in my diet for years because of the health benefits,” she says. “I add it to salads and smoothies; I cook with it. I smooth it all over as a hydrating treatment.” There are various benefits of coconut oil on skin and the oil is now making its way into body balms, skin treatments and anti-agers due to its moisturising properties winning over dermatologists.

Moisturising

Coconut oil makes an excellent massage oil as it acts as an effective moisturiser on all types of skin, especially dry skin. Unlike mineral oils, coconut oil does not have adverse side effects and is therefore a safe solution to preventing dry and flaky skin. The benefits of coconut oil on skin is it can improve the moisture and fat content of the skin.

Anti- Aging

Coconut oil is known for its antioxidant properties which assists in preventing degenerative diseases and premature aging. It works by lowering oxidative stress and supporting detoxification because of how it reduces stress on the liver. Coconut oil can be taken in 1 tbsp to slow down aging or applied topically onto skin for additional advantages of coconut oil on skin.

Treat Skin Disorders

The added benefits of coconut oil on skin is they can treat many skin disorders including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema, burns, dandruff and other skin infections. The fatty acids (Caprylic and Lauric) in coconut oil have the capabilities of reducing inflammation internally and externally, making them a great solution for all types of skin conditions. The antioxidants make it ideal for healing the skin.

Anti-fungal and anti-bacterial

The antimicrobial properties of coconut oil balance out the candida or fungal sources that cause many skin conditions. They are often used in products to help fight bacteria.

Sun protectant

In addition, Coconut oil can also be effective as a sunscreen as it has capabilities of blocking out the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

Prevent tooth decay

Oil pulling with coconut oil has been used for centuries in ancient Ayurvedic practice and has gained traction in western society now after the coco craze. It is a method of cleansing the mouth of bacteria and help heal periodontal disease. Coconut oil is most effective for oil pulling due to its high concentration of anti-bacterial medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) which removes oral bacteria as you swish it in your mouth. It improves your overall dental health and reduces bad breath. Coconut oil pulling is recommended for up to 20 minutes a day.
