Tips for healthy skin is something we think about often but neglect to act on. We all want to know the secret to that perfect skin instantaneously but it doesn’t always work like that.  Having healthy skin just comes down to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and keeping to a really good skincare routine. Let’s talk about 5 things to focus on to ensure your skin is glowing and clear.

Your skin is a reflection of what you consume! Eating junk food, drinking alcohol and not looking after your diet will cause your skin to break out in pimples and damage your skin. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day and maintaining a healthy diet filled with lots of vegetables and fruits will help keep your skin glowing! 

Eating fruits and vegetables that hold a high water content such as watermelons, cucumbers, strawberries and oranges will also help hydrate your skin. You may also want to place foods that are high in antioxidants into your diet like blueberries, dark chocolate and spinach. Low fat and low sugar diets promote radiant skin from the inside out! 

Hot Tip: Visiting a nutritionist or naturopath to help you create a diet regime focused around healthy skin can be extremely beneficial. You can also use guides to help you learn more about the best foods for your skin. Even keeping a food diary may help to motivate healthier eating habits!

Washing Your Face Correctly

The first rule of the face wash is to treat your skin gently! Always use a gentle face wash that best suited for your skin.  E.g. For dry skin ensure its an alcohol-free product and use circular motions in lukewarm water at least twice a day.  If you wear sunglasses or glasses often throughout the day to ensure you are getting a deep clean around your eyes and nose to keep any pores being clogged. It’s easy for there to become a buildup by everyday oil and dirt. Another place not to forget about is your jawline and neck when cleansing your face. 

Between 1-2 times a week, you should also be exfoliating your skin to deep clean your pores and remove bacteria. Build up such as blackheads, whiteheads and dead skin cells can be removed by simple exfoliation. You should be doing this especially if you are prone to wearing heavy makeup as it can often leave a residue if you aren’t cleaning regularly and correctly. Be careful not to do this too often as it can dry out your skin. 

Hot Tip: Avoid hot water when washing your face as it can really dry out your skin and cause damage. Also when drying your face gently dap using a clean and soft cotton towel or cloth. 

Know Your Skin Type

It’s extremely important to know your skin type to know how to best treat it. There are a number of variations you could experience, you may even notice the shift from time to time. You might find in winter your skin is dryer while in summer, you suffer from excess oil. Learning about these skin types will better help you to manage it and is one of the most important tips for healthy skin.

Dry Skin – 

Skin that appears dry and dull is categorized as dry skin. If this is your skin type you should be avoiding products that have alcohol or sulfates in them. You also need to avoid using hot water on your skin and the sun. The best thing you can do for dryness is to stay hydrated on the inside and outside. This means lots of water, choosing products that are hydrating to the skin and using a creamier moisturizer morning and night. Oily Skin – 

The skin has natural oils that help it stay moisturised but you may find that you naturally get too oily. If you find your washing your face twice a day and still can’t get rid of oily skin you may want to look at your lifestyle. Best way to deal with a break out is by using natural remedies. Make sure you are touching the break out area as little as possible to keep it clean. Avoid adding any more bacteria and dirt especially if it’s an open pimple.

Exercise like cardio helps your skin just as much as everything else. Sweating out toxins can help the skin stay fresh and clean. Using toner before your workout to minimise oil production as well as having an exfoliate and moisturiser routine after your workout will help maximise the effects of sweating out the toxins. 

Doing small facial exercise can also help keep the skin tight and firm. If you just take 5-10 minutes out of your day to do a couple of exercises such as looking up to the ceiling and pouting your lips. Another you can do is jutting out your lower lip and lowering your chin to your chest.  

Don’t Forget 

Applying sunscreen every day whether it’s cloudy or sunny will help protect your skin from the sun and the damage it causes. If you find you often feel greasy and heavy after application check that the product is a non-acnegenic so it doesn’t block your pores. If you’re following a good diet and good skin routine and still find yourself breaking out, don’t forget stress and hormones can trigger acne. By checking in with your doctor or managing your stress you can also help maintain healthy skin.
