What is a Temporary Hair Dye?

In the age of abundance of hair colours, it is not strange to be confused about permanent and temporary hair dyes. Hair dye manufacturers constantly come up with new improved formulas for hair dyes. Some of them are more effective in terms of lasting colour but also more damaging to the follicles. In contrast, temporary and semi-permanent hair colours fade as you wash them, partially or completely. But you will keep most of your hair follicles in good condition. Regardless of how you define temporary hair colours, they are an excellent choice for clients who aren’t exactly sure about the colour change they want.

Types of Temporary Hair Colours

You can find temporary hair colours under many different names. Non-permanent or semi-permanent hair dyes, colouring masks, shampoo colourants, colouring toners, and colour enhancers. All of these are different in some way, mainly for two main reasons – colour intensity and duration. But many temporary hair dyes have different formulas designed specifically. They are created with a hypoallergenic purpose in mind or to wash off after several weeks. Certain temporary hair colour brands will last as long as a month or two, while others will wash after two or three washes. The main difference between permanent and temporary hair dyes is that they do not contain harsh belching formulas. Other dyes penetrate deep into the hair follicle to change its structure. Temporary hair dyes are generally much gentler to the hair and should be used for sensitive, allergy-prone, fine and delicate hair.

How to Choose Temporary Hair Dye That is Right for You

If the ingredients matter, go for ammonia-free, peroxide-free, and alcohol-free colour which will wash off after a few weeks. Vibrant temporary hair colours tend to look better on bleached hair so you should adjust expectations according to the base colour. Colouring sprays are short-lived because they will be as good as your next shampoo. Semi-permanent hair colour may include some amount of bleach or ammonia and will not fade completely in 6 to 8 weeks. In many cases, brands that contain bleach will somewhat decolour the base hair. Therefore, only use them if you are looking for a more permanent hairstyle.
