20 Vol Developer

20 Vol Developers

Do you know 20 vol developer is the most popular choice for hairdressers?

Developers work by raising the cuticle layer and allowing pigment to sink inside. Although a higher percentage of peroxide means higher lift, you can also expect an increased chance of dryness and damage.

Generally, 20 vol developer contains 6% peroxide. This achieves 1-2 levels of lift without extreme dryness and damage afterwards. The developer is also perfect for covering average amount of grey hair, although we suggest using 30 vol developer for the most stubborn grey hair.

For smaller transformations, there is zero lift developer3.5 vol developer5 vol developer or 10 vol developer.

Bleach & Developer

Don't forget to stockpile plenty of bleach for the most spectacular transformations. When used together, bleach and 20 vol developer can achieve greater lift, although the exact amount depends on the products, technique and texture of the hair.

Before getting started, it's important to check the compatibility of your colour, bleach and developer. You can find this information in our collection of colour charts.

Choosing Between Peroxide and Developer

Developers are popular because each one contains a blend of peroxide and conditioner. Due to the conditioning ingredients, hair is less likely to experience extreme dryness and damage. Some developers even contain additives to protect hair during the colouring process.

Another difference between developer and peroxide is the consistency. Developer is thicker and less runny, which is considered better for a balayage.

While developers tend to cost a bit more, you can expect better results, which is the most important consideration.

Your Questions Answered

When deciding between 20 Volume and 30 Volume developers, consider the following:

20 Volume:

  • Suitable for covering grey, toning, or going darker.
  • Ideal for lightening hair by one or two levels, making it appropriate for gentle lightening and achieving complete coverage for over 50 percent grey hair with permanent colour.
  • A suitable choice for natural blondes aiming for a subtle lightening effect.

30 Volume:

  • Ideal for lightening natural colour, achieving medium lift, or intense colour changes.
  • Specifically designed for hair that is naturally resistant to colour, as it lifts up to three levels.
  • Provides longer-lasting results with maximum pigment deposition.
  • Excellent when used with bleach for vibrant red shades, lightening brown hues, or working with colours lighter than your natural shade.
Remember to always follow product instructions and consult with a professional for optimal results based on your hair type and desired outcome.

However, a common mixing ratio is 1:1, meaning equal parts of 20 volume developer and hair color. Always check the product packaging or instructions for the most accurate information as the specific recommendations may vary based on the brand and type of hair color product you are using.

The duration for leaving 20 volume developer on hair depends on the specific hair colour product and the desired results. Generally, the processing time for 20 volume ranges between 20 to 45 minutes. To avoid potential issues like over-processing or uneven colour, refer to product instructions or consult a hair stylist for advice.
