They are one of the more popular hair extension types because they suit most people, from a dramatic change for a night out to a subtle boost for everyday wear. They suit anyone who does not want permanent extensions, and they work for special occasions, events, and photoshoots, or simply days when you want extra volume. They are a good starting point if you are new to extensions and want to try them without commitment, and they suit people who switch up their look often and want the flexibility.

How to Apply Clip In Extensions

Applying clip-ins is simple and does not require professional training. Most people get the hang of it within a few tries. Start with dry, brushed hair and work from the nape upward.

• Section it. Part your hair horizontally from the nape of your neck and clip the sections above out of the way.

• Place the wefts from bottom to top. A Hey Stacey set runs across seven placements, with the wider wefts low and the narrower ones near the crown. Working up, the layout is two 2x1 wefts, then two 2x2 wefts, a 1x3, a 1x4, and a 1x3 to finish.

• Clip each one in. Open the clips on a weft, position it close to the roots along the section line, then press the clips down until they grip. Give it a gentle tug to check it is secure.

• Layer as you go. Take down the next section, place the next weft, and keep working up, leaving the top section for last so the clips sit hidden beneath your own hair.

The process usually takes 10 to 20 minutes, depending on how many wefts you use.

How to Take Them Out

Removal is as easy as application. 

• Unclip from the bottom up. Release each weft starting at the lowest layer and work toward the crown.

• Ease it out gently. Pull the weft away from your head from the ends toward the clips, so it does not tangle on the way out.

• Store it right. Keep the wefts flat or hanging to stop creasing between wears. A silk or satin bag works well, and a pants hanger is a handy way to hang them.

How to Care for Clip In Extensions?

Looked after well, clip in hair extensions last around 3 to 6 months with regular use, and some people get up to a year out of theirs. Because remy clip ins are human hair, they want similar care to your own hair, with one difference. They do not get the natural oils from your scalp, so they can dry out over time.

• Wash gently. Use a sulphate-free shampoo and hair conditioner to keep moisture and softness, and keep heavy oils and silicones off the clips, since they can loosen the grip.

• Strengthen weekly. A weekly hair mask helps hold the condition, since clip ins get none of the natural oils from your scalp.

• Dry and brush with care. Air-dry on a towel rather than rubbing or wringing; use a heat protectant before any hot tools; and brush gently from the ends up with a loop brush or wide-tooth comb.
