Collection: Clipper and Trimmer Accessories

Hair Clipper and Trimmer Accessories

Guards and accessories do the quiet work behind a good cut.
A guard sets the length, oil keeps the blade running smoothly, and a fresh blade brings the edge back. This collection pulls together the parts and care products that keep clippers and trimmers working, from the brands barbers trust.

What's in the Collection

This collection has the parts and care products that keep clippers and trimmers cutting clean and lasting longer.

  • Guards. The combs that clip on to set the cutting length. Wahl single guards run from #1.5 up to #8, with premium versions in #1, #4, #6, #7 and #8, several in different colours. Barber Culture 8-pack sets in black or coloured cover the spread of sizes in one pack, and the sets and premium guards fill in the #1 length.

  • Comb sets. ANDIS magnetic comb sets clip on to set two close lengths, handy for tight, even work.

  • Clipper blades. A graphite fade blade from BaBylissPRO and a Master Cordless blade from ANDIS, for bringing the edge back on clippers.

  • Trimmer blades. For outlining and detail work, a gold T-blade from BaBylissPRO for the Skeleton Outliner, a stainless T-blade from ANDIS for the T-Outliner, and the Wahl Detailer wide blade.

  • Cleaning and care. ANDIS Cool Care Plus and Clippercide clean, cool and lubricate in one spray; Natural Look Dispel is a lighter cleaning spray, and the RedOne Technic Cleaning Oil handles regular oiling.

  • Storage and brushes. The clipper holder with a silicone mat keeps machines tidy and to hand, and the RedOne Rodeo fade brush clears cut hair from blades and necklines.

Choosing a Clipper Guard Size

Guard numbers match a cutting length, and they run about the same across brands.
As a rough guide, a #1 leaves around 3mm, a #2 about 6mm, a #3 around 10mm, a #4 about 13mm, a #6 around 19mm, a #7 about 22mm, and a #8 about 25mm. There is also a #1.5 at roughly 4.5mm for the step between the two shortest. For most cuts you work between sizes, shorter on the back and sides, longer on top, so a guard set that covers the range earns its place.

Matching Accessories to Your Tool

The main thing to get right is the fit. Guards and blades are usually made for a certain brand or model, so check what your machine takes before you buy. If you need the machine itself, the hair clippers and hair trimmers that go with it are in the wider electrical range.

AMR looks after barbers and home users the same way, with trade pricing on salon accounts and delivery anywhere in Australia.

Maintaining Your Clippers

A little upkeep keeps a clipper cutting clean and lasting longer. Work it in as a simple routine.

  • Step 1. Clean after each cut. Brush or spray hair and debris off the blades, since buildup can cause a clipper to snag or pull.

  • Step 2. Oil the blades. Put one or two drops on the blade while the clipper is running, holding it downwards so oil does not seep into the motor. Monthly is enough for home use; daily in a salon. Oiling keeps the blade cool and the edge sharp.

  • Step 3. Replace a dull blade. If the clipper starts to pull or tug, the blade has likely gone dull; swap in a compatible replacement blade to restore the cut.

  • Step 4. Store it right. Keep the machine in a holder or case so the cutting edge stays protected between cuts.

Your Questions Answered

A blade used daily in a salon may need replacing every few months, while a home blade lasts far longer with regular oiling and cleaning. The sign is when it starts to pull or tug, or stops cutting cleanly.

Some professional blades can be re-sharpened by a blade service, which is worth it on pricier steel blades. Cheaper blades and worn guide combs usually cost less to replace than to service, and a chipped or bent blade should be replaced rather than sharpened.

Not usually. Guards clip onto clipper blades, which are wider than a trimmer blade, so they do not sit on a trimmer the same way. Trimmers are built for edging and lines rather than for guarded length, so check the attachments listed for your trimmer to see if it takes any.
