Collection: Permanent Hair Dyes

Permanent Hair Dyes & Colour

Permanent hair colour is the standard for long-lasting, true-to-tone results. While a semi-permanent dye sits on the surface and washes out, permanent colour penetrates the hair cortex and locks pigment in. The colour does not wash out. It grows out. For anyone who wants reliable grey coverage, a dramatic change, or a result that holds through repeated washing, permanent dye is the answer.

Permanent, Demi-Permanent, and Semi-Permanent

Permanent colour works differently from the other two.

  • Permanent colour combines ammonia, or an alternative alkalising agent, with a developer to open the cuticle and deposit pigment deep in the cortex. It does not wash out; it grows out, which makes it the choice for grey coverage, lightening, and a dramatic change.

  • Demi-permanent colour uses a low-volume developer to deposit colour without lifting the natural pigment. It holds longer than semi-permanent but fades gradually, and it does not cover grey as completely as permanent colour.

  • Semi-permanent colour is a direct dye that sits on the surface with no developer. It washes out gradually. This suits experimenting with a shade without commitment.

How to Choose the Right Permanent Shade

The right shade depends on your starting level and the result you want.

  • For natural results. The N shades, 6N, 7N, 8N, and 10N, give a soft tone that blends with your base.

  • For cool, ashy tones. The A shades neutralise warmth. 6A, 7A, and 8A deliver cool blondes and browns, and 6AA and 8AA add extra ash intensity.

  • For warm, golden tones. 6M and 7M add subtle warmth without going brassy. For more reflection, 7BC and 7CG bring copper and gold depth.

  • For red and copper tones. The R and RC shades run from subtle warmth to vibrant intensity, including 5RR, 6RR, 6RC, and 7CC.

  • For brunettes with depth. 4N and 5N cover dark to medium brown, and the RB and BR shades, like 4RB, 6RB, 3BR, and 6BR, add subtle warmth for dimension.

  • For grey coverage. For up to 50% grey, use your target shade alone. For heavier grey, mix your target shade with a natural base for even, complete coverage.

To build a routine around your colour, the hair products for coloured hair range covers shampoos, conditioners, masks, and treatments.

Why AMR for Salon-Grade Permanent Colour

Professional permanent colour uses higher-quality pigments that deposit evenly and fade more gracefully. The formulas are more concentrated, so you get richer results with less product, and Matrix SoColor is pre-bonded, which makes it straightforward to formulate and apply. The colour holds, and it grows out evenly rather than patchily.

AMR stocks salon-quality permanent colour from Matrix, L'Oreal Professionnel, Harvest, and Limitless, with clearance shades from Wildcolor, Pravana, Schwarzkopf, and Wella. Shop at an AMR store near you, or have your order delivered anywhere in Australia. The wider hair colour range covers semi permanent hair colour and hair toner too.

Your Questions Answered

Your roots will show regrowth after about four to six weeks, which is when most people book a touch-up. The colour through the mid-lengths and ends lasts far longer, softening slowly with washing, heat, and sun rather than lifting out on a set timeline.

The way to manage it is upkeep, not avoidance. A pre-bonded colour like Matrix SoColor helps protect the hair's bonds throughout the service, and a hair bond builder, alongside regular hair treatments, keeps hair in good shape through repeated colouring.

Darker shades hold longest. Lighter results usually need lifting first, and lifted hair is more porous, so the tone fades faster. Reds fade quickest of all, since the red molecule is the largest and washes out before other pigments.
